HAND HARVESTED FROM CHEQUAMEGON BAY IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN
Chequamagon Bay on the south shore of Lake Superior is steeped in milling history. The shores of the bay were home to many lumber mills. The first cut that was made off a piece of timber was thrown into the lake and sunk to the bottom. The piece that was cut and thrown in the lake is called Slab Wood.
In the summertime, I dive in areas where the old mills were and bring up old pieces Slab Wood. They have soaked up the waters of Superior for over 70-100 years and are heavy and fragile. But, they have a wonderful flat side, and when dried in the sun make natural canvases for artwork. When they dry, they are extremely lightweight.
Size: Each piece is unique in size. However, the small pieces of slab wood you see here are approximately 6” x 9”.
